This book is about the circular human-centred regeneration of the Historic Urban Landscape (UNESCO, 2011) of Matera. HUL of Matera is interpreted as a complex dynamic system which includes the ancient city, the new one with new peripheries, and the territory. The human-centred paradigm was already proposed in the New Urban Agenda of UN Habitat in 2016. But it has been strongly stressed by the European Union in the last time. During the European Year of Culture 2018, ISCEC, the International Committee on Economics of Conservation of ICOMOS, has been engaged as an official member of the EYCH2018 Stakeholders Committee. Specific proposals have been offered regarding the role of heritage assets as the entry point to implement the circular economy model in cities. Together with the National ICOMOS Committee of Italy, ISCEC organized an International Conference in Matera in December 2018, to celebrate the 25th year of UNESCO inscription of Matera Landscape in the World List and to better specify its proposals for the EYCH18. The goal was to discuss, to harvest and to propose some new ideas about a possible regeneration strategy of Matera in the perspective of the circular economy: a "circular human-centred regeneration" (Fusco Girard et al., 2018) strategy, grounded on the intrinsic value of the Matera landscape. The book gathers the papers of participants. Most of these participants were members of ISCEC. Some of them were also involved in a EU Horizon 2020 Research on the re-use of heritage assets in the perspective of the circular economy (CLIC Project). Many cities, and in particular many metropolitan cities in North Europe, are today implementing the model of the "circular city", as the reflection of circular economy into the physical space/territory. Matera has a very long tradition in this direction, which could become useful also for other cities, in particular for medium-little size cities. The general thesis is that the "circular economy" is an economy of relationships in which all economic values co-exist and co-evolve with ecological values and with social/ human ones, thus allowing the implementation of a human-centred strategy (see the chapters of Fusco Girard, Nocca and Fusco Girard, Bosone).
