The Workshop was held in Naples, on 28-29 September 2023. The fish price index (FPI) relies on trade statistics because seafood is heavily traded internationally, exposing non-traded seafood to price competition from imports and exports. Easily updated trade data can thus proxy for domestic seafood prices that are difficult to observe in many regions and costly to update with global coverage. The FPI generally reflects seafood scarcity, but it can also be separated into indices by production technology, fish species, or region, or split into capture fisheries and aquaculture. The FAO Fish Price Index (FPI) is regularly published in the FAO Food Outlook, although the index has not yet been included in the official FAO Food Price Index. The annual index workshop represents an important opportunity for collaboration between the participant experts in formulating proposals for adjustments of the fish projection model built by FAO. The purpose is to report on recent trends, new developments, while also providing a forum for the discussion of possible improvements and the future direction of the project. Valentina Rossi, Senior Researcher at CNR - IRISS has been invited as an expert in international law. In fact, the ongoing research activities are aimed at broadening and improving the analyses carried out, focusing, inter alia, on how and to what extent the social and environmental dimensions could and should be taken into account in addition to the purely economic one.
